Thirty-eight years ago, a story of football and family — specifically, the Mortons and Mayes — began.
“Sports is a small world,” Mark Maye said with a chuckle. “It’s amazing how a lot of things circle back.”
In the summer of 1988, Maye, who had just completed his college career at North Carolina, found himself as a backup quarterback in training camp with the Buccaneers. One of his teammates? James Morton, a fullback out of West Texas State.
Neither would make an imprint on the Tampa Bay roster. But now, 38 years later, their sons are teammates with the Patriots — with Drake Maye as the league MVP runner-up starting quarterback, and Behren Morton as the No. 3 signal-caller on the depth chart.
