Now you might be wondering something reasonable. A story course sounds enjoyable, but will it really make a difference to my Spanish?

Here is the honest answer, and it is the whole argument for building the course this way.

You cannot discuss a mystery in simple sentences.

To say who you think the third name belongs to, you have to narrate what happened. Then speculate about what it means. Then explain your reasoning.

Then somebody disagrees, and you have to concede one point while holding on to another.

That is the exact machinery of adult conversation. It is also, almost precisely, the grammar that separates B1 from B2.

You will not be studying it. You will be using it, because you want to be right.

And here is the part that outlasts the four weeks.

Look at what you have actually been practising: narrating in the past, explaining why someone did something, advancing a theory and defending it, conceding a point, changing your mind out loud.

None of that is about this story.

That is the toolkit for any serious conversation in Spanish. An election. The news. Religion. Why someone's marriage ended. What your own grandfather never talked about.

A mystery just happens to be the most enjoyable way anyone has found to make you use all of it at once.

Picture a Sunday in Spain, months from now. Lunch ended two hours ago, the plates are gone and nobody has moved.

This is the sobremesa, and it is where the real conversation happens.

Someone turns to you and says cuéntamelo. Tell me about it.

And you do. Nobody switches to English.

That is what actually changes. Not your Spanish, exactly. Who gets to meet you in it.

The story ends on the 29th of September. The Spanish does not.
