Today: Advice from our readers on how to get better sleep. Plus …

Our readers’ tips for better sleep

For some of us, our bedtime routine is sacred. For others, we’ve never gone to sleep at the same time two nights in a row. Some enjoy the sound of rain or the jungle to fall asleep, others need complete and total silence. There are all kinds of mattress preferences out there. And don’t even get us started on pillows.

In other words, there is no one way to sleep well. And yet it’s something we all need. Every night, ideally. Below, we’ve rounded up some of your best tips and tricks.

Our writer uses a macaroni-shaped pillow to soothe her achy neck. This reader takes a different approach:

G

Gayla

I've totally get this. My pillow, for side-sleepers, is thicker on one side than the other. I too put it atop a regular pillow. I angle the pillows forward to cradle my chin.

We recently shared a few ways you can recreate that dreamy hotel sleep at home. A reader echoed one piece of our advice:

K

Virginia

We slept so well at a hotel that we bought the mattress they use. It lasted 10 years, and I'm heart broken that they don't make it anymore. It wasn't even a high-end hotel.

Fighting over the covers? We have a suggestion. This reader has another one:

S

Shanniqua in wine country

Been sleeping with 2 duvets for a long time. I’m the hot sleeper and he winds his heavy duvet into a corkscrew cuddle pal by am.

We also color code the pillows. I have a whole 3 pillow set up. He’s supposed to remember….. lol. Yes, I’m the sleep diva here.

Reading a Kindle at night helped one writer finally get to sleep. Here’s another option:

D

Dena

I have discovered the same works with audio books and there is no light, wrist strap, or reading glasses needed. I can set a timer so the book stops after xx mins.

We recently learned how to drown out noisy neighbors from college dorm RAs. Here’s another tip:

L

Leigh W

Sleep masks with built in Bluetooth speakers work great, there are 9 hour podcasts of white noise out there to drown out most noise and it will also pipe in your alarm so you don't miss it.

Today’s great deal: Socks that feel like walking on clouds

Three pairs of socks.
Michael Hession/NYT Wirecutter

These plush, spongy, “uniquely gushy” socks are a favorite among Wirecutter’s newsroom. Their super-soft interior feels like a real treat to wear. And we love all the pretty colors they come in.

Editor’s pick

Inspired by tastemaker and gifts editor Hannah Morrill, I got myself a little end-of-summer treat in the form of some bright, rubber Seavees mules — one of our most favorite, giftable shoes. Not only are they extremely versatile with their vibrant red color and slight platform sole, but they’re also mostly waterproof. I wore them on a very, very rainy night at the US Open earlier this week, and my feet were the only part of my body that stayed dry all evening long.

One last (sleepy) thing: Gifts for people who love to snooze

Several kinds of items gifts for people who love to sleep.
Michael Hession/NYT Wirecutter

As we’ve established, we all have to sleep. But there are some of us who love it more than others. Our gifting experts have rounded up a collection of thoughtful, cozy gifts for the sleep lover in your life.

Including comfy PJs, dreamy silk pillowcases, and a plush weighted blanket→
