‘The Final Solution to the Jewish Question: A Love Story For the Living’ by Dara HornNovelist Horn offers a sharp, provocative analysis of antisemitism, which is driven by claims that “Jews are destroying whatever you value most” It's a belief “that turns bigotry into a righteous cause, because it makes people think they are fighting for their ideals.” Horn advocates combating this by teaching the full story of the Jewish people in ways that model resilience and encourage curiosity. This is a trenchant and brutally honest, yet often surprisingly optimistic, report on one of humanity’s oldest prejudices. more
Abolitionist John Brown (1800–1859) inspires this fiery but scattershot call for a more just Christianity. Radio host Luqman frames Brown, who tried to incite a slave revolt and was executed for treason, as “the epitome of a white man in this country who rightly divined the word of God” and used it to fight injustice. Much of her ill-focused book contrasts him with Christians who’ve “used their faith to justify” oppressing marginalized people. It’s a passionate cry for change that too often gets in its own way. more
Pastor Alcorn makes an earnest but flimsy case that in God’s eternal plan humans' and animals’ destinies are “intertwined” and that God has an “everlasting covenant” with animals. Unfortunately, Alcorn spends much of the book overquoting from scripture and speculating on such questions as whether animals might speak in heaven. Even ardent Christian animal lovers will be disappointed. more
On September 15, Pope Leo XIV (l.) was presented with a copy of Freedom Under Grace, a collection of his writings and speeches from before he became Pope. Father Joseph L. Farrell (r.), the prior general of the Augustinian Order who wrote the book's foreword, joined him at the Vatican as the book was released that day in all formats in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and the Commonwealth.
