In the Running
The final two National Book Award longlists—Fiction and Nonfiction—have been revealed, featuring a mix of familiar names and several surprises. Knopf executive editor Erroll McDonald, who worked with such literary greats Toni Morrison and Wole Soyinka, will retire at the end of the year after five decades at Random House. Little, Brown executive editor Bryn Clark is returning to Flatiron next month, where she will oversee the imprint’s nonfiction list as editorial director. PEN America has appointed author and Marine Corps veteran Phil Klay as its new president following the resignation of Dinaw Mengestu in July. Plus, today saw a deluge of deals for authors including Tara Westover, Beth Brower, and Brynne Weaver. In other news, President Barack Obama’s much-anticipated books podcast will feature a slate of high-profile authors as guests, per Book Riot. For Bloomberg, Vauhini Vara takes a closer look at Pangram, the “world’s most reliable AI detector.” The New York Times talks with comedian Anthony Jeselnik about his popular online book club. And Pulitzer Prize–winning author Annie Dillard has died at 81.

Allison Dobson landed U.S. rights to 13 novels in the Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion series, which the publisher said has sold more than 1 million copies. Georgina Capel, who has an eponymous agency, handled the deal. Volumes 1–8 will release in November. more. »
Hayley Wagreich and Sierra Stovall at Zando’s romance imprint won world English rights to two untitled duologies by the author of the Ruinous Love trilogy in an eight-figure deal, brokered by Kimberly Whalen at the Whalen Agency. The first title is set for 2028. more »
Bad in Bed, a full-cast audiobook from the romance author, will release on Amazon’s Audible on October 22, just weeks after the debut of Prime Video’s adaptation of Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis. more »

For the 2026 Frankfurt Book Fair, Publishers Weekly will run its annual literary agency rights listings online only. Agencies are limited to five entries. Entries must include: book title; author name; publisher; publication date, if available; a brief, preferably one-sentence description of the book and one-sentence on the author; and rights sold, if available. more »
The American Library Association has named authors Bess Kalb and Tony Weaver Jr. as honorary chairs for the annual event, while student advocates Marshall Romero and Azeemah Sadiq will serve as honorary youth chairs. more »
