Note from Los Angeles VA Regional Office Assistant Director, Jamie Cannon
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer awareness reminds us of the strength, resilience, and early‑detection advocacy needed to protect our communities—and this message holds special meaning for our Veterans. Many who have served face unique health risks due to their service, and increased awareness, access to screenings, and supportive resources are essential to ensuring they receive the care they deserve. Data shows that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. VA provides screening mammograms to detect breast cancer early when it is most treatable. VA provides on-site mammograms at over 80 VA facilities, along with access to breast ultrasounds, MRIs, biopsies, genetic counseling/testing, and full cancer diagnostics, and treatment—including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation—either on-site or via community referrals. The National Oncology Program (NOP) treats more than 56,000 Veterans annually, delivering evidence-based cancer care and expanding precision oncology, telehealth, and clinical trials opportunities.
